Penguin Mug

This penguin mug features a hand painted underglaze design that is carved to look like a block print design. I've left the design unglazed so there is a fun texture when you hold the mug. 

I made this design after visiting a small town called Timaru in the south island of Aotearoa New Zealand, where I was lucky enough to watch little penguins (known as Kororā in Te reo Māori) come back onto the shore at dusk to nest in the rocky crevices along the coast. The world's smallest penguin, these tiny creatures stand approximately 30cm tall and weigh only 1 kilogram!
